Climate change is causing extreme weather events (heat waves, droughts, flash floods, etc.) in Europe. We face a number of different challenges in this context. In this module, we aim to share information on global climate change and provide practical help to combat it in our daily lives and to adopt on the effects of climate change.

Climate change is strongly noticeable – also in community gardens. Heat, drought or extreme rainfalls present us with major challenges. In this module you will find out how a garden can be made fit for climate change in the future through suitable interventions, techniques and behaviour. You will learn what great importance soil, water management, plant selection and planting techniques as well as the design of the garden have for successful adapted gardening. Quality of stay and behaviour around the garden are equally important.

Community gardens usually play a central role within the local communities. Their role for education and awareness raising about climate change is very important but don’t always have the skills and knowledge to promote these activities. This module will provide a series of concrete tools and strategies to answer this specific need.

Community-managed gardens can serve as urban green infrastructure and educational hubs. The community gardens’ leaders can find themselves in a new role of educators who need to provide the knowledge and tools in a holistic education system to empower community gardeners to make a positive impact in their neighborhood. Thanks to the dynamic experience-based curriculum that educates and inspires community gardeners to care for themselves, their community, and the environment we help to mitigate the climate change outside of the community gardens as well. In this module you will learn how to create a meaningful educational experience that invokes feelings, is engaging and participatory as a result of hands-on educational activities.
