Module 2

Community gardening in a changing climate

Climate change is strongly noticeable – also in community gardens. Heat, drought or extreme rainfalls present us with major challenges. In this module you will find out how a garden can be made fit for climate change in the future through suitable interventions, techniques and behaviour. You will learn what great importance soil, water management, plant selection and planting techniques as well as the design of the garden have for successful adapted gardening. Quality of stay and behaviour around the garden are equally important.

Learning Goals:

This training module learning goals are:

  • To have a better understanding of the importance of water management, soil cultivation and plant choice in relation with a changing climate.
  • To know what factors influence the micro climate and the “staying quality” in the garden.
  • To have a good basis for reflection of climate-friendly practices in the garden.
  • To become aware of the fact that everybody can make an important contribution to climate protection and climate change adaptation through adapted gardening in the own (community) garden.

Module 4

How do teaching skills help in empowering community gardeners

Community-managed gardens can serve as urban green infrastructure and educational hubs. The community gardens’ leaders can find themselves in a new role of educators who need to provide the knowledge and tools in a holistic education system to empower community gardeners to make a positive impact in their neighborhood. Thanks to the dynamic experience-based curriculum that educates and inspires community gardeners to care for themselves, their community, and the environment we help to mitigate the climate change outside of the community gardens as well. In this module you will learn how to create a meaningful educational experience that invokes feelings, is engaging and participatory as a result of hands-on educational activities.

Learning Goals:

The learning goals of this training module are to:

  • Learn about the forms, methods, and techniques of non-formal education useful for a community garden.
  • Gain the knowledge on how to develop your own and group’s competences.
  • Learn how to prepare training activities according to the needs of the participants.
  • Find out how to bring know-how about climate change adaptation and mitigation to the garden members.
