TOPIC 1: Protecting from wind

In this topic you will get information why protection from wind is important and how hedges can be used on other levels.

Hedges can have a very powerful impact on wind reduction and thus counteract the drying out of the soil, especially when planted against the main wind direction. Hedges can be composed of wild fruit species and thereby can be a habitat and a food source for animals & gardeners. With foresight planning those hedges can even replace fences and therefore additional use of materials and financial resources.Even their wood can be used so hedges can be used on several

levels.  The selection of the plants for hedges should include a variety of plants and be adapted to soil and climate to enable a good plant growth. Hedges can be good places to cultivate rare wildfruit species and can thus contribute to the preservation of these plants.  Be aware in planning that many wildfruit hedges can become quite big with the time and some wild fruit species like sea buckthorn need male and female plants to produce fruits. Please also pay attention to maintenance measures as some hedges benefit from regular pruning and compost application.Along hedges also lower growing shrubs like berries can be planted. This stepping of the hedge positively affects the air turbulence and at the same time the garden space can be used more effectively.
