Climate Conscious Community Garden Certificate

Summary

Although every community garden indirectly has a positive impact on the climate of its environment, being climate-conscious is a higher level that is worth reaching.  This year Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre introduced the Climate Conscious Garden Certification and logo on its Community Gardening Projects website (www.kozossegikertek.hu) This certification is awarded to community gardens that meet all 3 main criterias:

  • water saving,
  • biodiversity and
  • waste management (towards zero waste goals).

This certification aims to reward conscious steps towards eco-friendliness with this logo and draw attention to the positive activities of the garden towards the wider community.

Since 2010 the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre (KÉK) has been engaged in the naturalisation and distribution of community gardens. The Foundation worked to make this self-organised movement methodology, legal background and models adaptable to the Hungarian environment. It also supported the development of the cause with education, consultancy and creation of a knowledge base with special regard to institutional and individual adaptation to climate change.

KÉK Community Gardens Project provides gardening opportunities for almost 800 city residents. Apart from the gardeners working on the plots of our community gardens, every year thousands of people attend the various workshops, cultural and community development programmes.

Organising community gardens of the country into a network would be an important next step in the development of the community gardens project, as well as establishing connection with similar international platforms. Its website, with its renewed content and functionality, is an important instrument for this, and we hope it will not only provide current information about Hungarian community gardens, but also function as a coordinating- and knowledge centre. The Foundation likes to share its knowledge that has been gathered during the past years and would like to provide a platform where community gardens and their gardeners and people curious about the topic could find each other and become participants of a bigger community.

Activities: Garden management

2. Activity detailed description

The Climate Conscious Garden Certificate is a recognition that is also a motivational tool. The gardening community, applying for the label, must rethink its activities in terms of climate awareness. They need to assess whether they can and will change their current gardening practices, if necessary, and whether they are striving for water conservation (rainwater harvesting, biodiversity and zero waste).

On one hand, the Climate Conscious Garden Certificate helps to create a climate-conscious identity for garden communities. On the other hand, this certificate strengthens the sense of belonging among community gardens in Hungary.

Implementation steps

If there is no such certification existing in your county, it is time to implement some!

  1. If the garden is part of a community garden association the idea would be raised among the partner organisations.
  2. The awarding criteria-system must be precise, well defined with high emphasis on climate adaptation issues. Involvement of community gardens into the elaboration of the system would be useful
  3. Based on the expertise and experiences of the gardening communities, provide guidance, examples and good practice to illustrate possible solutions to meet each of these conditions.

4. Conclusions

The Climate Conscious Garden Certificate is a motivating recognition for gardening communities. In order to get the certificate, the gardening community must consider its common and individual activities in terms of climate awareness. They need to assess whether they can and will change their current gardening practices, if necessary, and whether they are striving for water conservation (rainwater harvesting, biodiversity and zero waste).  The Climate Conscious Garden Certificate helps to create a climate-conscious identity for garden communities and strengthens the sense of belonging among community gardens.

Advice / Recommendation

"A positive tone is important when communicating the introduction of this certification scheme. It is worth emphasising that the aim is to raise awareness in order to take effective, collective action on climate change. The aim is not to make community gardens compete, but to increase motivation and the number of climate-conscious communities."
